Contemporary House extension, Eskbank , Midlothian

This architect-designed contemporary rear extension in Eskbank, Midlothian, transforms a traditional home into a light-filled, modern family space. The project brief was to create a spacious kitchen extension and dining area that seamlessly links to the existing living room, making it ideal for modern family life.

A standout feature is the bespoke window seat with storage, which acts as a welcoming transition between the living room and the new extension. This detail not only maximises space but also creates a cosy corner to enjoy the garden views — a thoughtful touch that adds both function and character.

Externally, the new house extension is finished in smooth white render with a scratch coat, complemented by sleek metal standing seam cladding over the canopy. These materials give the rear elevation a crisp, contemporary look, updating the existing home’s appearance while maintaining a timeless feel.

Internally, large aluminium sliding doors and strategically placed roof lights flood the new kitchen dining extension with natural light. This bright open-plan living space is a stunning transformation from the original dark kitchen, making it perfect for everyday family life and entertaining alike.

A modern kitchen with carefully chosen finishes completes the space, ensuring that this Midlothian extension feels both stylish and practical. This project is a great example of how a thoughtful house extension in Midlothian can revitalise an existing home and enhance its connection to the garden.
