Guiding You from Concept to Completion – RIBA Stages 0 to 6

At MDA Studio, we follow the RIBA Plan of Work — the UK’s gold standard for structuring building projects. This framework breaks the project down into clear stages, ensuring a smooth and well-managed journey from initial ideas to final handover.

Here’s what to expect when you work with us:

Stage 0 – Strategic Definition

At this very early stage, we help define your goals. Whether you’re considering extending, renovating, or building from scratch, we’ll talk through your needs, priorities, budget, and timelines. If needed, we’ll carry out an initial site or building assessment and identify key constraints or opportunities.

Stage 1 – Preparation and Brief

We develop a clear brief with you — outlining what the project needs to achieve and the design challenges to solve. We also begin assembling the wider team (e.g. surveyors, engineers) and gather any necessary background information such as measured surveys or site analysis. This forms the foundation for good design.

Stage 2 – Concept Design

Here’s where we start drawing. We produce initial concept design ideas that respond to your brief — showing you how your home could look and function. We’ll explore massing, layout, materiality, and overall feel. Early cost and planning considerations are factored in, and we can involve a Quantity Surveyor to give initial budget guidance if needed.

Stage 3 – Spatial Coordination

Once a preferred concept is agreed, we develop it further — refining the design, room layouts, proportions, and key details. We coordinate the input of structural and services consultants and prepare the design package for planning submission (including Listed Building Consent, if required). This stage ensures the project is ready for statutory approvals.

Stage 4 – Technical Design

With approvals in place, we prepare the detailed technical information needed for construction. This includes building regulations drawings, specifications, and coordination with engineers and other consultants. We also prepare the tender package and assist you in selecting a contractor, ensuring the design is fully resolved and buildable.

Stage 5 – Construction

Once on site, we can act as Contract Administrator — monitoring the construction, responding to technical queries, and making site visits to ensure the project is being built in line with the design. We manage progress, assess contractor payment claims, and keep things on track. This is where your project becomes reality.

Stage 6 – Handover and Close Out

At completion, we help manage final snagging and handover tasks, ensure all certification and documentation is in place, and confirm that everything has been built correctly. We remain on hand for any questions and to support you during the early days of settling in.
