Community Hub in Spylaw Park, Colinton, Edinburgh

In 2020, following a competitive selection process, MDA Studio was appointed as the architect for the refurbishment and adaptive reuse of the Spylaw Shed — a disused stable block located within the Spylaw Park Conservation Area in Colinton, Edinburgh.

The project involves a complete change of use and sensitive refurbishment of the existing structure. The proposed design introduces a flexible, mixed-use space at ground floor level, capable of supporting a wide range of community and cultural activities. A key feature of the project is the addition of a new raised roof structure, accommodating studio or office spaces above, alongside essential facilities including accessible toilets and a lift.

The intervention has been designed as a contemporary but contextually responsive addition, aiming to revitalise a neglected building and bring lasting value to the local area. The project not only celebrates the site’s historic character but also future-proofs it through careful detailing and inclusive access.

It has been a privilege to work on this project over the past few years. With planning permission now secured, we are progressing towards the next stage, with the ambition of seeing the project on site in 2026.
